@Kate first off, thank u for writing this article. when i was setting up my MCC account back in September 2009, this was one of very few useful resources. i have to also thank u for being responsive back then.

btw, i should note for current and future visitors of this page, that i wrote in-depth step by step instructions on my blog (also back in sept) that i think will be useful for those looking to set up MCC.

I just tried reading this afternoon all the information that google puts out and I am confused. Based on the comment left by Olivier (last comment), what would be the correct way of doing this so that the certification stays with the user?

I have been using Google Adwords on my own account for 6 months now and I am going to start managing the accounts of two clients starting next week. What would be the right way of getting set-up so that I do not run into the problems that you and Olivier have run into?

I appreciate your advice.

Hi Olivier!

Yes, they are telling the truth. This is one of the few downsides to the MCC and AdWords system. I have taken and passed the AdWords exam twice now, but in my MCC I am not a "professional" because I haven't taken the exam. This has been brought up to Google many times, but still doesn't change. Hopefully someday they can assign the certification to a google account instead of the account.

For now, you will need to get another login for the MCC you are in and certified for if you continue working with that, and then use your main Google login for your own MCC. That's what I would do at least.

Sorry, there is no fix for this right now that I know of, annoying as it is.

Hey Kate, very interesting article! I login to a client center of a customer of mine to manage several of their adwords accounts (they have multiple web stores). Recently, via the "Pro Center" tab I did the exam and passed. However, I have standard access to the MCC concerned and would like to have my own client center to be able to look for new, additional customers. So I contacted Google Support and they say my Qualification Status in intrinsically linked to the MCC in which it is logged. (Basically, when I use my existing login e-mail to try and open a client center, it says I already have one; I used to same Google account both to pass the exam and to login to my client's MCC). According to Google, the solution would be to open a new adwords account, do the exam again and adhere to (again) min. spending requirements. This of course is quite absurd. Do you have any solutions ?
I am asking because it is not necessarily because one customer rep tells you something (it was via Chat) that it is correct.

I find the start-up pages very confusing, it asks you to login with your google account, then it says you can't because there's an adwords account connected and when I chose to create a new Google account it told me I had to start a NEW account after I logged in. Oi! I'm confused.

Hey thanx for your reply.

To signup I had to login with the my existing adwords account. Later I got an option to signup for new account (or use existing google account) to be used for the client mgmt account. Though the recommended option was to create a new login.

I did create a new login which now acts as the login to my client account. Since I had already logged in with one adwords account, I was able to see the account details after the signup to the client account was complete. hope this makes sense. :)

Once again, thanks for your post.

Hi Pete!

That may work now, but when I last did it, I had to use my Google login ... but since it was associated with one account already (it was an admin login), it couldn't let me build another account (the MCC account) with that email. They could have fixed it, if they have, it'll let you know when you sign up. If it is that way now, please let us know and I'll add a note changing the instructions.

Try it with the one you have now, no worries. Go by Google first, I just had that issue when signing up myself.

Thanks!

You have mentioned "But remember that if that email address is associated with any other AdWords account, you have to disassociate it (remove it temporarily). You’ll be able to add that client into your new MCC soon, promise."

But Google says "Enter your current AdWords login email and password.
No AdWords account? Create one through the sign-up wizard. Then return here to join the program."

Not sure which to follow...
