ShopLocal Powers Google Froogle Local Shopping

Was sifting through Brian Smith’s Comparison Engines blog today and found this little fact which has not been covered much in the search news arena. Remember Froogle Local, a new way to search for local merchants who carry specific products? Well Brain points out that Froogle Local’s content is powered by ShopLocal, the local shopping engine.

Yes, ShopLocal is providing the local content for Froogle’s new Local Shopping service. Anyone who has clicked through on a listing can see this. However, ShopLocal isn’t providing local inventory information as Channel Intelligence is doing for CNET Shopper.

I think the local inventory information is the future, but the Froogle/ShopLocal content is an extremely important step forward.

Chalk up the Google Froogle partnership as a major coup for ShopLocal, which already has some strong existing content providing partnerships with multiple local newspaper sites all around the US.

Currently there are 3 major suppliers. ShopLocal supplies local shopping data primarily for sale items (via digitized circular ads). StepUp Commerce supplies Froogle with over 10 million location-specific products that include full inventory from retailers like CompUSA. Channel Intelligence is also supplying data.
