I needed this boost to my morale. I tend to get discouraged sometimes when I don't see something working. I have yet to get one lead off my social media, but I have great results with a small adwords campaign. Thanks for the encouragement.

It is hard to explain how much time needs to be taken within the process of SEO. People want instant results and as you correctly mention, it is not possible for effective results. Patience and consistency is definitely the key to success. Great article!

This article speaks the truth! Especially in this economic downturn, a lot of companies aren't willing to spend the money on SEO and the like. It can be really depressing when you get in a rut of no business. But the key is to keep on chugging.

Two thoughts:

This is the same issue with meatspace networking-- you can just pop in and out of relationships. You have to develop them over time. If you graph the value you build over time, it will probably look like a hockey stick-- very flat for a while.

Consistency is hard because there's a the lack of tools to track/manage your effort. I'm biased in saying that because BuzzStream is releasing a social media engagement tool. But based on my experience (and if you look at salespeople) you have to have tools to build relationships effectively, at least with any kind of scale.

One thing I find helps to say consistent is to set certain goals. Where it's number of RSS subscribers or number of stories you make popular ect. As long as you set some kind of goal you are able to see your progress.
