Thanks everyone, and yes I do definitely agree that personality and sincerity go a long way. The one part tech nerd, one part artist is seriously dead on! That’s quite a good way to look at what makes up a successful link builder.

I’m constantly amazed at the way some folks handle link building. My blog site is Do Follow (WordPress based), and I obviously catch tons of stuff that looks like commentary but fails the #hashcash test.

(I smell robots or … at the very least… robot-like comment spammers!)

I also get folks that practice fairly bad comment etiquette by using a Keyword instead of a name (even though I have KeywordLuv installed).

It’s the little things that get to me, I guess.

In the end, link building – when done correctly – takes a lot of time and consistent effort.

I love what Joel Santiago said above about training their link builder hard. To build links correctly, you need to be one part tech nerd, one part artist. After all – it’s really about community. And, at least for my part – the end goal is to take things “Off Line” over time – with the cool folks I meet via blogging etc.

Genuine personality and sincerity go a very, very long way in this business. Don’t you agree?

Great post Julie. I myself run a link building agency and we’re always surprised by the lack of SEO knowledge that link builders in other agencies employ.

I met with one leading UK SEO agency who left link building to their tele-sales team! I couldn’t believe it!

There’s a lot of common sense involved in linkbuilding . . . We train our link builder hard!
