I plan to be in this niche as an authority for a good 10 years or longer. So it’s a win-win situation. - what if google go down in 2-3 years?

@Aviva: Under normal conditions, I'd agree. Unfortunately, the client has a web setup that makes it very difficult for me to contribute regular content.

I am also building the mini-sites to be mostly "voice of the industry" as far as the content goes. They will appear mostly neutral. Initially, however, outbound links will be to the client's website. In the future, there may be some links to their contributors. It depends on how neutral these mini-sites have to be.

If I focused my efforts only on their current site, it would not be possible to remain neutral. (Remember, these mini-sites are being run by me, and will always remain that way. I may in the distant future use them to promote my own sites in the niche.)

My 2 cents: it looks to me like you are making your life unnecessarily complicated by trying to rank so many domains. Trustrank rewards mega authorities. If all the time and resources you spend on trying to rank several sites were concentrated on one site, I think you'd do much better.

@Sherwin: Okay, I admit that I am not yet a full-fledged SEO and am still learning terminology. So maybe sub-niche is wrong. I have in fact heard successful SEOs mentioning "microniche" - a slice within a niche.

Here's a bad example. If the niche is wireless gadgets, then a microniche might be wireless gadgets with VoIP.

My client's interest isn't exactly like that, but as I've said, I can't give it away so it's a little difficult to explain. Essentially, I mean that they are focusing on certain services within a niche. Hence why I'm referring to sub- or micro-niches.

Ummm...broad niche? Sub-niche? Small niche? Tiny niche? Okay this is getting funny now. I'm not taking away from the gist of this post Raj -- I get it. But a niche is a niche is a niche. If something has a 'sub-niche', then it's not a niche. It's a sector (or even a sub-sector). Industry. Sector. Niche.

Now if you're talking about the number of players in your 'niche', then maybe it really isn't a niche, and more of a sector. The niche is a very specialised service/product within a sector of that industry. For example: A link-building service is a niche of SEO which is a sector in Internet Marketing.

@Ahmed: Excellent advice. The reason for the keyword domains is that they WILL become very hot in 2-3 years. I know that's very long term, but some niches are like that, and I'm a long-term thinker. I plan to be in this niche as an authority for a good 10 years or longer. So it's a win-win situation.

thanks for the mention Raj...<em>"I suppose the aww shucks, you didn't have to"</em> thing fits here :)

Anyway, looking through your list, I'd say that:

a) budget SEO is a bitch, and the best bet you have in your case is linkbait, linkbait, linkbait like a crazy
linkwhore

b) if its a small niche then getting #1 is not too difficult. I understand that 'difficult' is relative, and the #1 site may be miles ahead of the competition, but unless that's the case you stand a good chance of overtaking them.

c) Consider multiple long-tail variations of that target phrase and start working on getting rankings for them.

d) Not to question your business model, but why use keyword domains in a tiny niche (makes sense to do that kind of SEO in a broad niche)? Could you be going too deep?

All of this is tempered by the fact that I have no clue what industry you're talking about :)
