Microsoft to Challenge iTunes with Urge

Microsoft to Challenge iTunes with Urge

This from Topix:

“In its first serious bid to challenge the dominance of Apple’s ubiquitous iPod and the iTunes cyberstore, Microsoft today will release a more compelling software ‘jukebox’ that partners with an MTV-programmed music service called Urge.”

It’s a subscription service; you can subscribe for $14.99 a month, or download individual songs at .99 a pop.

If you go to the Urge site, you can get a free 14 day trial. In order for Urge to work on your computer, you have to have Windows Media Player 11 and at least Windows XP. Doesn’t work on Macs and it’s not fond of Firefox, either. URGE is actually a property of MTV Networks, but is partnered with Microsoft. Basically everytime someone downloads Windows Player 11 or upgrades their Windows Player, they’ll also get Urge.
