Microsoft Beta Testing New Search Engine

Microsoft’s MSN division has launched a sneak peek beta test of its new MSN Search Engine. The new MSN Search is a full speed ahead effort for Microsoft to catch Google and Yahoo in the search engine race. Last week Microsoft’s Bill Gates commented that Google has blown away Microsoft in the realm of search, confirming that Google “kicked our butts” in a statement given at the World Economic Forum.

The new MSN Search Beta Test can be previewed at http://beta.search.msn.com

At first glance MSN more or less uses the same style for their layout, but now clearly differentiates the difference between organic search results and paid search advertising. A plus for MSN.

If you search for “online marketing” on the current MSN Search you’ll find a mixture of Looksmart driven Web Directory listings, Overture Sponsored Link ads, and Featured Sites… all peppered over the organic Inktomi results.

The New Beta Version is rumored to be delivering results from MSNBot, the new search engine developed by Microsoft (you may sometimes see Inktomi results during testing). The listings show no directory driven sites and are much cleaner… gearing up for a new IE browser that’s MSN Search friendly and Microsoft’s new toolbar. Here’s the same “online marketing” search on MSN Search’s Beta Test.

According to a statement on ResourceShelf, MSN Product Manager Karen Redetzk reports that

“In order to increase relevancy, MSN Search is testing solutions on MSN Search to a small percentage of consumers in various markets worldwide. Tests serve as no indication as to the direction MSN will eventually take in the future but rather are research to determine the most useful consumer experience on MSN Search. Tests or changes in one country do not necessarily indicate what may or may not be tested or changed in the US or other markets. We determine the needs of customers in individual markets and make the best decision for that market based on both consumer and advertiser wants & needs.”

Speak your mind!

  1. Personally, I think Microsoft needs to offer two branded Search Engines; an MSN one and one dependent from MSN. For all of those who hate MSN, but may like the engine’s functionality. But what do I know?

MS could launch a branded engine successfully in no time at all, with the size of their media monster and partner base.

  2. I think the results are coming up better then google for results as long as inktomi doesn’t take over for top results organic results i think is the key for any succesful search engine. Google was great till about a month ago now alot of results are not relavent especially after there austin update. MSN now has a great chance of moving ahead of google.

  3. As long as the shifty SEO actions like multiple domains, hidden unrelavent links, and other questionable tactics are held in check (unlike what is happening with Inktomi), I welcome any challenge to Google’s supremacy. It’s a well known fact that Google’s results have downgraded over the past year due to spammers and domain resellers and it’s impossible for them to currently keep up with the advances in spamdom, If MSN can conquer the problems that SEOs create for the search engines, I’ll fully applaud their efforts.

  4. I did the testing and now aam finding iy hard to get the simpilest enformation…Like is testing over when given a number to call it was disconnected….I would like to be apart o ffutuer testing but who can I call if I have A question?

  5. I haven’t gotten much done these days. So it goes. What can I say? I’ve just been letting everything pass me by. Basically not much going on lately, but it’s not important. I’ve basically been doing nothing worth mentioning.

  6. MSN is not best way. Try metasearch http://www.tripleme.com which fetching results from Google,Yahoo,MSN on one screen in three columns side by side – 3 in 1 solution.

According to TripleMe users statistic data of 20000 requests, 40% of results found in the Google column, 31% of results found in the Yahoo column and 27% of results found in the MSN Live column.

So, if you use only MSN – you lost 73% of potential results !!!

3 in 1 solution is definitely the way of searching today.
