Content network campaigns also require a different style of ad because the user is in a different mindset to the search network.

Richard, the goal is to drive revenue at an acceptable level of ROI. You are correct if you mean Content network gets more impressions, but our goal is sales, so CTR plays in as well- though Content network impressions are higher, CTR is lower, and content campaigns have to be managed properly to get good ROI. Search network campaigns have less impressions but higher CTR... to get the maximum impressions for an offering, you need BOTH the Search and Content networks.

Although you can still use ppc advertising to drive sales and profits it must be undertaken carefully. Have you read my post about how pay per click and especially AdWords has changed over the years? I'll use that link URL for this comment.

If impression share is one of the metrics that your campaign is being measured on then consider turning off the search network.

Some search network sites don't show as many ads as Google search does so unless you have a good ad rank you can miss impressions here.
