These are means to prevent the manipulation of search results. If every paid links count then what is the point of having good content? And what is the point of using Google search engine?

It is part of Google's strategy to continue its search world domination. This can only be done by providing relevancy SERPs to their searchers and it is done at the expense of us, the webmasters.

Whilst I appreciate the fact that he's putting stuff out there, the lack of responses is maddening. I know he can't respond to each individual post but, in some ways, it would be better that he didn't say anything at all!

A good example of this is the post on Google Hell. 210 comments. How many by Matt? Zero.

Carsten, he avoids answering a lot of questions. That's what bothers me, that Google staff don't answer most questions - about adsense or whatever. It's frustrating.

Mike, I can probably wait for an answer until I am old and die and still won't get the answer from Matt. I asked him more than once and he must have noticed that. He avoids answering the question on purpose .. obviously.

He had over two months to check with management, if that would have been necessary.

The not answering the question is the part that gives me headaches, because it means that I have to expect the worst.

No peaches here. :)

Raj is spot on with the statement that there's a fundamental conflict with what Big G are currently doing. I'm not saying that this latest crackdown on paid links is purely driven by their desire to protect their AdSense cash cow but it's going to play a part in it.

I'd love to hear Matt's response to your comment, Carsten. The points you raise are valid and deserving of a public response although I also agree with Halfdeck that their continued public dialogue is further fuelling the FUD.

Halfdeck, I'm not sure who you mean by "we", but I do. At least I try to, for those people who come within my frame of reference on a regular basis - my readers, biz partners, collaborators. But that's neither here nor there. I agree with you though. Let them do whatever they want. If the market has a void, someone will fill it. Give the people (web surfers) what they want.

Really, Google's mistake is venturing into the advertising arena. There's a fundamental conflict in there somewhere for a search engine, but I'm too groggy to elaborate.

"They don’t have the average person’s concern in mind."

Are you telling me we give a shit about the "average person"? Stop kidding yourself. Like the pot calling the kettle black.

Google's mistake is too much transparency. It's time they stop talking to the webmaster community. This "dialogue" is leading nowhere.

I hope you take into consideration that others can buy paid links for their competition with the hopes of malice and intent. Personally I think this is pointless… spend your time improving Google other ways… the results listed as of today are perfectly fine as they are now. Your just opening the doors for someone else to start up something else etc… and the circle will never end. Not relating to myself but you are also going to hurt many individuals who base their families income around websites and some markets where a lot of link power is just not feasible… thus forcing them out of income and a job.
