Thanks for the introduction to Kido'z. Great post! Providing an added security layer for parents to give them peace of mind knowing their children will not end up in a "dark alley" on the internet, and targeting such a lucrative niche market...what a smart, innovative start-up.

I think you are right on. I feel like many web companies are face a sort of day of reckoning. Youtube just posted gigantic losses and Facebook can't seem to monetize like they should. Although, Youtube did just sign a huge studio deal, it seems like user generated content is being 'outted' as not the golden ticket everyone thought it was going to be. Ok, enough with that rant, Kido'z though is impressive. The internet is wonderful but many of it's dark alleys are not meant for kids. And honestly is there a better market? It never goes away, and more and more kids are online, it blows me away to see what my 11 year old brother has available to him now compared to when I was 11 in 95.

Thanks Josh and Kristen. If anyone knows startups, I think collectively we have tested or written about as many as anyone. Of course you guys have far fewer typos :) Seriously, I know you guys look back and think of the enthusiasm we all had for these things. It is not too late, and as Josh points out, some are on the fringes of profitability. For me, the profit does not outweigh the excellence that could be achieved with so much money. For KIDO'Z I know there is money to do things, but with the kinds of investment these other startups have gotten, I truly believe most of us could have done better.

Thanks so much ...really,

Always,
Phil

This is the line that sums it up for me: "The bottom line for us as either marketers, communicators, developers or investors is directing development toward something people are willing to pay for in the first place. It is called making a valuable, needed or wanted product."

Definitely agree! The best business model on the web: sell something people want.

Also, slight caveat: I think MySpace was actually a successful exit when it sold to News Corp. in 2005 and I believe it is profitable now, although just barely.

The re-emergence of software is a great way to look at it. I wish such learning tools had been around when I was younger. Something like this can really push technology forward in the learning environment and education system.
