We receive a lot of traffic from non-U.S. sites because our website is available in both English and Spanish, even though we haven't done much optimization on the Spanish pages. Having content in Spanish makes our company easier to find when people are performing a search.

Great insights, Victoria. Thanks!!

The next step after ranking well on non-U.S. engines is to make sure the site itself is appealing to your non-U.S. target audience.

Even if you've got a good translation and/or the right spelling, having U.S.-only ads or offers on your site is a sure way to quickly turn off prospects who originally were interested in your company.

Hi Victoria,

I have a number of niche sites in Australia (.com.au), however they are hosted in the US. I still receive position 1 rankings for some decent two word phrases in Australia, + i get around 35% US traffic as well.

Yes Alysson, being from the UK often wondered how my spelling would affect my U.S SEO efforts.

I'm glad you pointed out the issue of spelling, Victoria. While we in the US refer to SEO as "Search Engine Optimization", those in the UK would refer to it as "Search Engine Optimisation".

These variations are important to consider if you're attempting to target an audience outside the US. Certainly some food for thought!

Last November I attended an interesting session about International SEO at SMX London.

I wrote an extensive summary about the session, including the presentations with a lot of key take-aways on stuff like sub domains vs. sub folders, hosting location, TLD, etc.:
