Google Desktop 2 Out of Beta, Adds Maps

Interestingly, Google has started taking some of their services out of Beta stage for practical usage. The company has finally removed the beta tag from their very popular Google Desktop 2 product. This final release comes in both consumer and enterprise versions. The product is useful for indexing and finding information stored in PCs. In fact, the news of this product going final just days after Google announced their deal with IBM where IBM would be implementing this product in their local intranet.

Google has provided this final release on their website and it is a freely available download. Some of the new features include a new addition to the sidebar panel showing a map panel. This panel customizes itself based on the user’s online activities by looking for relevant keywords like zip codes on web pages.

The search engine giant has also said that this update brings support for JavaScript to write Sidebar plug-ins. This would result in easier programming work for developers to make plugins for this application. Google Desktop website currently has on offer more than 100 plugins available for download. For the corporate users, Google has the enterprise edition, which has management, and security features for extra security.
