Wikipedia in Print?

Move over Britannica, Wikipedia is now the hottest keyword in town. The open source online encyclopedia might get a print edition if we are to believe its founder Jimmy Wales. He also said that they are even considering putting the wiki based encyclopedia on CDs and DVDs for wider distribution. The aim is to make it accessible to people who are not connected to the internet.

Wales also made it clear that they currently have no plans as rumored in the media to freeze certain pages to prevent distortion by malicious web users. Wikipedia is open for editing to anyone and everyone with an internet connection and a web browser. However, they review all the changes over time and remove false and improper information.

About the book project, Wales said: “We are talking to several agents and publishers about what they would be interested in. I have always liked the idea of going to print because a big part of what we are about is to disseminate knowledge throughout the world and not just to people who have broadband.” He expects the first edition of the print to be ready from somewhere near mid 2006.
