Can AOL Rescue Yahoo or Is It the Other Way Around?

Merger talks between Yahoo and Time Warner’s AOL have been around even during the failed Microsoft - Yahoo saga. But it is only now that the said deal seems to be getting on clearer ground.  Citing sources close to the negotiations, TC’s Arrington is reporting that both companies are in currently busy ironing out the details of the merger deal.

If indeed this merger talks come into a reality, it raises some interesting questions, one of which is the question on which of the two companies would benefit from deal? Structurally, the deal would have Yahoo acquiring AOL’s content service and advertising properties sans AOL’s subscription dial up business. It will also bring in some billion dollars into Time Warner’s fold and will give Time Warner some stakes in the Google-Microsoft search advertising battle. With all the buzz around recent Google Blogsearch relaunch, I thought that would a good idea to look at most popular blog meme trackers available online.

The most general definition of the word meme is:

A meme consists of any idea or behavior that can pass from one person to another by learning or imitation.

Ask.com Parses More Data, Gives Answers in Search Results

Ask.com is making its presence felt in the search engine market by introducing two new features of its search engine recently. News.com is reporting that Ask.com is now parsing more data and displaying these in its search results page. Starting today, if you visit Ask.com and ask a question, Ask.com’s algorithms will try to display the answers in the results page instead of just giving out links to the answer. Although, Ask.com used to do this before when it was still Ask Jeeves, the process was manually done before. Whereas now, the whole process is automated through Ask. com’s algorithms. [Read more →]

Google, Yahoo Search Ad Deal Delayed

In a couple of weeks, the heavily-criticized search ad partnership between Google and Yahoo are supposed to materialize. But perhaps not wanting to face further issues, the two search giants decided to wait for the Justice Department to finish their study first.

According to a Yahoo spokesman, the deal was delayed a bit to pursue their ongoing discussion with the Justice Department, awaiting further questions from the regulating bodies relating to the specifics of the search ad deal. Although Yahoo might be affected by the delay, the company has no choice but to wait for the regulators’ decisionto avoid possible scrutiny and perhaps legal sanction later on. [Read more →]
