"Any successful in-house program will take absolute commitment from the top down on the technical side of the house."

That is exactly right. If you do not have that commitment, it can be a struggle with regards to understanding. I remember when I first started in house, I had zilch knowledge about SEO. And I work for an Inc 500 company. Imagine the stress of that :P. However, I placed great initial efforts in learning and it did not take mne long to understand. I used to feel as if no one understood what I was doing, but looking back, I had that commitment from the President and I am thankful for that. Great article, I enjoy in-house SEO articles.

Good interview. I really like the point of educating everyone within the company on a strong sense of doing SEO properly. And working at an agency, the point of possessing good presentation skills is essential when meeting with clients or simply getting your ideas across to the higher-ups. ~ Billy

Hi Cvos,

Just wanted to clarify that Dave is over PPC and SEO for the Yahoo properties, such as Yahoo Personals and Yahoo Travel. He's separate from the Yahoo Search engine, and the Yahoo Search Blog. Dave is an in-house search marketer, similar to an in-house search marketer at IBM, New York Times or Intel.

Surprisingly, because of the huge wall between him and the search team, Dave is just as much in the dark as we are!

That being said, it would be nice if Yahoo had an open communication channel, similar to Google. Perhaps it will happen one day.

Dave, thanks for the interview. You talk about your own self education efforts, which I assume mimic those done by Google and other large internet properties.

How do you stay on the top of the industry’s changes?
I attend industry conferences, read all the online e-zines, and ask our SEO experts what’s happening on all the message boards and blogs... We also leverage internal wiki-like tools to share new information and best practices in the organization.

Sharing some of these resources and being more transparent and open with information would have a huge impact on users. Matt Cutts does this and has had phenomenal success.

There is no reason that this couldn't happen to a Yahoo blog if you opened up in the same way. The current http://www.ysearchblog.com/ just doesn't have interesting articles or give any unique spin on readily available information.
