Hurricane Katrina Aftermath Online : the Good, Bad, Ugly

The world is still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. How is Katrina affecting the online marketing world and how is our industry helping OR hurting the issue? I believe thousands of sites are featuring Katrina donation PSA banners for victim relief.

Even though the news we see on TV has slowed down somewhat, the need for relief funds has not. It will take months of assistance for these families to even begin to get some normalcy in their lives. So please keep those banners up! Following is a compilation of blogs and articles about online marketing and Katrina – the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good – “Say what you want about the online marketing community, but one thing is for sure – this is an extremely generous group. They responded quickly to the devestation and there are many efforts to donate money, resources and even ad space to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.” Revenue Magazine – Online Marketers Help with Katrina Relief Effort.

“Americans who want to know more about the aftermath of Katrina, along with those who want to contribute to the relief efforts, are increasingly favoring the internet. Nonprofit organizations are receiving record levels of aid online. The Red Cross has received $21 million for the relief effort, 75 percent of which was donated online. iMedia Connection: Katrina’s Effect on Online

“Hundreds of bloggers have been sending their readers to charities that accept donations for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, with traffic and donors focusing on… the Red Cross and Salvation Army.” Blogs Send Visitors, Donors to Katrina Charity Sites   MarketingVOX

The Bad and the Ugly – “As heart-wrenching images of devastation and despair from New Orleans and others parts of the Gulf Coast continue to rivet Americans from coast to coast, experts are warning that scammers have already devised elaborate phishing attacks and other online scams meant to target the outpouring of response to hurricane Katrina.” Phishing, Malware Scams Rise in Katrina’s Wake

I am totally disgusted with Ben Stein’s article “Get off the Man’s Back” I think he is very ignorant and very callus to bother to write an article like that at this time. He should be spending his time and money helping the victims, instead of defending his political buddy, George Bush. Who cares about George Bush right now, we need to make the victims our priority and forget about playing the blame game right now. A man as smart as Ben Stein has lost all of his integrity with me, this article only proves just how selfish and inconsiderate and thoughtless he is, to spend his time writing such as ridiculous article defending George Bush to try and boster his popularity when his own american people are suffering such devistation!!! I guess when you have the money that Ben Stein and George Bush have and you live the privelege lives they do, they cannot fathom what the other half are going through. God help Ben Stein!! I used to admire him, now I just feel sorry for his ignorance!!!

People like you make me sick. I’m personally glad that Mr. Stein is standing up for the President, since very few seem to do, not to mention when some people actully blame the President for the hurricane, which, is a complete peice of BS.

I had no idea Ben Stein was so ignorant and blind until I saw forwarded his article on Hurricane Katrina. How many times can a person see the incontrovertible evidence before his eyes and turn away in disbelief? My god, what has to happen to this country before people understand the long downward slide that greed and short-sightedness has lead us to? Is the destruction of an entire American city not enough?

I find it hard to believe that a supposedly educated man can continue to swallow, for example, that “there is no clear-cut evidence that global warming even exists.” So I am left with the conclusion that this man simply does not care about what happens to the citizens of this country and the state of the world so long as the right people’s pockets continue to be lined with green (and I don’t mean plant life). Even the apathetic population of this embittered country can only swallow the “it’s all right folks, just go shopping!” line for so long before they notice that the country is falling apart all around them, while a bit part actor in Beverly Hills can sit back and idly wonder why the dumb blacks couldn’t just save themselves. The sad attempts to extend this period of blindness using false authority and shallow fame will not be forgotten, certainly by me.

I know I will no longer tolerate Mr. Stein’s despicable politics. He was cute enough on his little game show on Comedy Central, but there’s a reason why his major outlet is a comedy channel. This man is not a political commentator – he’s a joke.
