While I definately agree with Neil on this one are a few legtimate reasons when a referal from email or im could be legtimate.

I could emaila friend and say look at this cool link on digg and copy in the digg url, I don’t know how common this is in comparision to gaming but I would have thought it was reasonably common.

If you really want to be sneaky just email/IM your friends with the link to your dugg stories and tell them which to digg.

I’ve also found that holding off on a StumbleUpon of a blog post until it gets Dugg is a good way to build Diggs.

1. Site gets Dugg
2. Submit to StumbleUpon
3. SU traffic may use Digg button and Digg site
4. This means more Diggs :)

It would make sense that you come from the article and Digg sites as intended rather than get directed to the Digg page just for a vote.

Good advise Loren. I’d also point out that be sure not to have all your friends on the same IP – all your co-workers for example – digg a story at once. Digg surely would reconize that.
