The query is not only to show to your customer what isn't there, it's mostly to show what could be there. By showing a second listing in the top 20 (which Google indents when SERPs are expanded), you can easiliy see what Google might do when this result enters the top 10. Therefore, Matt just put at light how to find these opportunities, now it's our turn to increase rankings on these opportunities.

What would happen for searchers who have set their results at 100 per page? Will any site with multiple results in the top 100 automatically get their lower ranked results pushed up to the indented position?

I fail to see how this actually helps him at all. Sure, he can run his query a specific way, but that isn't the default behavior of other users and will not actually gain him any traffic. Is this a technique you use to show your clients results that don't really exist? Sorry to be harsh, but this is possibly the most useless article on SEJ that I've ever read.

Great job Matt! Thanks for the helpful insight...even though I am aware of this technique, you do in fact explain much better than I could do. Well done!

So the strategy (I assume) would be to try to push the 2nd page result into the top 10 so you'd get the indent on a normal search. I think I'm reading into that correctly...
