Thinking of the name from a marketing perspective I think that it really does work for the phone.

Droid definition: "The robots of the Star Wars universe. While androids look somewhat human-like, Star Wars' droids are typically fashioned in the likeness of their creators or in a utilitarian design that stresses function over appearance. Droids are equipped with artificial intelligence, though some are naturally created smarter than others depending on the function they are designed to serve."

Verizon is borrowing the rights to use the name "Droid" from George Lucas, so the phone is being marketed to consumers as a device thats not just another smartphone to compete against the iPhone but also as a technologically advanced device with built in functions designed to help users get from point A to point B in the way that a device called a "Droid" would.

Apple definitely has great marketing for the iPhone, but I think that for what the Droid is being promoted as Verizon's marketing right now is pretty on point for it being something more than just another smartphone (aka the iPhone).

I guess Apple has to work hard, to keep Google at bay. On the other hand statistics are tools to prove a point and without the whole picture and circumstances, the numbers can be used pro and con, just as it is done in the article. Some people like oranges, others like Apples.

Why would you want an 3GS? just cause its looks slick? Paying for an overpriced product?

The 3GS is behind the curve.

Android system are better,

Event the G1.. tethered since it came out.
Android Does Multi tasking
Android Does Voice search / dictation
Android Does Free Google Navigation
Android Does Free Speech recognition
Android Does Flash when rooted
G1 could surf and talk since day one.
Android has Done Bluetooth audio before the 3GS
Android updates even benefit the G1
Android Does Goggles (Picture search)
Android Does 500gb external drive

Now the Droid, Raphael take it to a new level and soon the Passion.
Larger screen most likely 1080p in newer versions

HPSA is coming out at the end of the year for T-Mob, while 3GS still struggles for bandwidth.

Android has 19174 as of today and growing 60% of them free. Costs less to operate and use.

Now most apple fans will say, Itunes. Itunes is music / video tied with strings to Apple. You can easily obtain the same from Ebay, or Pandora or Imeem. Video.. I use Hulu and Netflix with my G1!!!!!

Alright the G1 and Magic don't have multitouch, but all other Androids do. And its easy to pinch zoom with Dolphin!

If you want to choose the best product for the money, a G1 is going for 50 at Walmart, but a descent phone like the Eirs for 100 is a lot better option than anything Iphone.

i think Google is after the same market space as Microsoft, not Apple.
Apple wants the premium end of the market not the 90 percent Microsoft wants.
With the hardware business Apple is in and the profit margin Apple is after, Apple is not interested in cheap. As far as browsers, the more browsers that use Google, the better for Google, who is going to use Microsoft Bing , other then those with Win7 whose default search is Bing. Apple's default search in Safari is Google.
i think Google and Apple complement each other.

But isn't droid a terrible name for marketing purposes? Simply based on the name, would you rather have a "Droid" or an "iPhone"? Apple certainly is better at marketing.
