Google & Vodafone Working on Mobile Maps System

February 12th, 2007 by Loren Baker, Editor | No Comments

While Yahoo is working with major mobile & wireless carriers to provide advertising via the mobile Yahoo network and its partners, Google is working with Vodafone to develop a GPS oriented location based Google Maps for Vodafone users.

The Guardian quotes:

“Vodafone sees Google Maps as a new milestone in the relationship that both companies are developing,” said Frank Rovekamp, Global Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone.

“It is a prime example of how Vodafone, through its location service and distribution scale, can complement Google’s products and unlock mass-market access to exciting services.”

I’m interested in seeing who wins the mobile usage battle, Google or Yahoo (or MSN).

Google has already positioned itself as the ultimate mapping and navigation system even beyond the web with Google Maps providing aerial and 3D shots on CNN and other television news stations.

On the other hand, Yahoo Local Search is much more social, inviting and user driven. Would users prefer mobile maps over trusted and informal information?

Which is more of a beneficial service to mobile Internet users?
