Google Top Search Engine in January

February 23rd, 2004 by Loren Baker, Editor | No Comments

According to a Nielsen/NetRatings report released on Monday, Google topped off the January search engine usage charts with 39 percent of active Internet users using search engines- 59.3 million unique viewers used Google to do searches.

Yahoo Search (using Google results at the time) and MSN attracted 30 percent of the search engine market each, according to data. According to the NetRatings report, Yahoo had 45.7 million unique users, and MSN, 44.6 million.

America Online’s search (powered by Google) was fourth, with 15 percent of surfers using AOL, or 23.4 million unique users.

Ask Jeeves, with 8 percent of web searchers (or 12.8 million users) came in at fifth place. (The percentages add up to more than 100 percent because some people may have used more than one search engine.)

With Google[s own results and AOL using Google, this shows that Google still has a strong grip on the search engine market, even after Yahoo chose their own quasi-Inktmoi pwered Yahoo Search Engine over continuing to serve Google search results.
