Google Shrunk its Search Results Page

newgooglesearchresultpage

Honestly I didn’t notice the difference until I read from Mashable that Google have changed the way it displays search results. As usual, I couldn’t find any announcement about it at the Official Google Blog. So, I take it to mean that Google may still be ironing out some kinks related to this “enhancement.”

So, what are the changes? There are three “unnoticeable” things actually. First, which should have been quite obvious I were closely paying attention was the shrunk Google logo at the top of the page.  Then there is also now a big space in between the search box and the first row of the search results page.

As to the search results itself, these are now indented but the most significant change was the removal of the page size indicator. This indicator gives you an idea of how long it will take for the page to load. Google also removed the word “pages” from the previous  ”similar pages” link.

Was there any improvement in the loading speed? We have no way of telling now. But ii could be faster or slower. Perhaps if you’re a keen observer whenever you use Google search, maybe you can easily tell whether there was any change in the speed of loading the search results or none at all.

So, any idea on why Google did these changes? Is it for aesthetic purposes? Revenue generation or what?  Do you like the new look of Google search results page? Personally, I prefer the old one or maybe perhaps I could learn to like this new look once I get used to it.

Honestly I didn't notice the difference until I read from Mashable that Google have changed the way it displays search results. As usual, I couldn't find any announcement about it at the Official Google Blog. So, I take it to mean that Google may still be ironing out some kinks related to this "enhancement." So, what are the changes? There are…
  • I dont know why they did it but it was sometimes useful.
  • I think it's merely a User Interface change, nothing to do with addition to advertising or other premium content.

Something that might not be so obvious is the fact that they have kept the navigation links to the very left (where users look first, according to HCI studies)

This is probably just a way to get users to look there more often and use the other features that Google has to offer.
  • I think it is done because of usability issues or perception, now it should be clearer for users to fell borders between the listings. Also I can see Google uses only the half of the page to display results and another half is empty for example if you search for the term “testing” where no ads are displayed.

Google might have planned a new strategy to compete with Bing of LiveSearch, a potentially growing threat, so it shrinks it results for earning from advertising, and expand other conveniences like map.google.com, image, and video...
  • That is wierd that Google is making these, seemingly, minor changes. I doubt it has anything to do with load times. If I had to guess, there is some sort of new monetization methods in the works. Probably some new way of displaying ads.
  • Hhmm nice observation. Well Google has changed its policy about updates and now its more frequently updating stuff at Google. And yes Google is The Best.
  • Hey thanks for the careful look at the new interface.

You are right, you could miss the fine details as I did without your pointing them out.

To me it looks like Google is trying to "Bing-ify" their page. Bing has such a nice new uncluttered look that may Google is trying to imitate the look and feel which has gotten Bing excellent marks in the professional community.

I think Google is making space for some premier advertising. Just imagine showing your text ad immediately after search box. If it was only aesthetics, why is the change limited to web search and not other specialized searches like Blogs etc.

  • As you say, it could be for aesthetic purposes, just minor little tweaks. It's odd timing though, considering its not been that long since they introduced a whole suite of minor tweaks on the page.

Or knowing Google, it's making some room for something else...

    Anyone care to guess?
