Google Recruiting for OpenOffice.org

Google is on a mission to improve OpenOffice.org and show its affinity for open source projects. Google wants to trim the memory requirements of OpenOffice.org and its huge 80 MB download size in what may be a first step in the GoogleOffice project.

Google is now looking to hire some engineers to work on the project and is actively recruiting, more or less, for OpenOffice.org. Google’s projects like Summer of Code and the financing of other open-source projects have positioned Google as the OS friendly tech company, which is the opposite card that Microsoft is playing.

“We use a fair amount of open-source software at Google. We want to make sure that’s a healthy community. And we want to make sure open source preserves competitiveness within the industry,” Chris DiBona, Manager for Open-Source Programs at Google told ZDNet.

The Google – OpenOffice.org announcement is the first major development of the Google and Sun Microsystems partnership which was sealed earlier this month. Sun are the developers of StarOffice, the technological father of the OpenOffice.org application.

hmmm… it’s funny how everyone still thinks Google is working on a Google Office project. they really aren’t. it’s too hard to go head on with Microsoft Office and everyone knows it. all they’re doing is lending a few of their engineers to help the project a little. they have the money and the resources so why not.
