One reason is that when you sign in to Gmail you only need to type in the first part NOT the @gmail.com part. Also, your account might have been hacked. That it all I have to say for that matter.

I'm in the same boat, my Gmail account has been disabled for some unknown reason. I've held it for over 4 years and got through so many cell phones in that time (and countries) that I have no idea what number they are requesting for verification. It wouldn't help anyway since I no longer have the number as I'm no longer in the country where I first registered the account.

I've tried the alternative option and emailed customer services and nearly 2 weeks later still no response. In addition, my blog which is a valuable travel diary of sorts, is also now disabled and can not be accessed (even old posts). Presumably this is because it is linked to the Google email address.

Very frustrating. Perhaps the answer is to cut my losses and invest in a domain name and hosting site that won't do this without explanation seemingly at a whim and I guess associated with technical problems on their part (since I've done nothing which breaches their long list of no-no's!!).

Fortunately, I have more than one account with them. However, it definitely makes you think again about relying on the storage of any valuable information that you might require in the future.

What the heck? I got my account disabled too. But mine was temporary and I read that it will be recovered. Will be updating if some miracle happens.
