When Google makes a change, the entire world listens; even when its something as tiny as changing its favorite icon image.

Instead of the big capital G, Google is now serving a smaller case blue g next to its URL in the navigation window of your browser :

Why the switch? Possibly Google is trying a brand image change, and testing it with the favicon. You know, no longer are they the Microsoft style super BIG G, but still little google :)

Do you like it?

I hate the new favicon. It is older than retro, which would have been cool, but nope. Not happening for me.

  • CT Moore says:

I really like its minimalism. It feels humble, which is an important counter-balancing consideration for the leviathan of search. The color is also calming and non-threatening. Me likey…

  • The old one was much better.

Speaking of which, how come you don’t have a favicon on SEJ Loren?

Google New Favicon precursor too new revolutionary interface update? Why change something as inconspicuous (too normal end user – but obvious to web techies) as a favicon but so OFF standard of the current branding. They’ve (big 3) all had similar interfaces forever, great time since the MSN/Yahoo distraction to make an in your face, one up move. I can only hope, change rules!

from my post over here: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/05/new-google-favicon.html

lot’s of speculation on this, please be a sweeping change to all the G interfaces

    I hate it.

I can’t stand it when people use lower case characters for proper names like companies. I started seeing it about 10 years ago. People used all lower case for their logo… It annoyed the hell out of me then and it still annoys me.

Almost every new Web 2.0 website thinks they need to have their name all lower case now??? Why?

    What’s the strategy or benefit?

  • Hawaii SEO says:

It looks too much like the number 8

  • all hail style says:

Makes the old one look positively Jurassic. Anybody who prefers the old one might as well order Depends and start checking out nursing homes.

  • Don't Encourage Limp Design says:

Count me in the don’t like it category. It doesn’t say “google” and it doesn’t look blue on my screen–more of a lavender. It looks low-rent and indirect. It’s certainly not bold and innovative. Looks like a bad joke by some subversive snake worshipers.

  • josh althorpe says:

lower case always looks less redundant. colour is obviously a joke.

  • The Watcher says:

I wonder if it is the start of something much bigger?

  • potter says:

i dont like it at all, why fix something that aint broke…

  • Karl Horak says:

I dislike change in general. Ergo: no good.

  • Interesting thing this Google Favicon thing, but i don’t understand why it was replaced, maeby this is more Web2.0 :)

  • Vulcan Eager says:

Its depressing. No, please. I want the old favicon back.

  • Dave says:

I like it! Not sure why I see so many negative comments… it’s stylish, simple, and the lowercase “g” subtly sticks out when you look at the Google logo in its entirety. Less garish than the old logo.

  • Rohit says:

I just hate it, old one was very good and easily recognizable on your web browser. It only confuses you even more. Stylish it might be, but Google is not about style its all about simplicity and usability.

  • i hate that new g. I, G, am better.

  • Very interesting….. Google has changed it’s favicon to something more colorful. Google even has a explanation for this change.
