Google Confirms Over Half of All Searches Come From Mobile

This past week at Recode’s Code/Mobile conference, Amit Singhal, senior vice president of Google Search, announced that over half of the 100 billion searches conducted on Google each month come from mobile devices.

An important distinction made is that Google is not counting mobile devices with screens exceeding 6 inches in size, such as tablets. When counting mobile searches, Google is primarily counting those coming from smartphones.

Singhal explained how the definition of search is evolving to encompass how people fundamentally interact with their devices,

“Search as we think about it is fundamentally how you will interact with computing. Computing may live in a 4-to-6-inch device, it may live in a desktop, it may live on a 1-inch round device.”

On Google+ this week, John Mueller shared the news about mobile searches, along with a warning to those who are not yet mobile-friendly:

“More than half of Google’s searches are now coming from mobile. If you haven’t made your site (or your client’s sites) mobile-friendly, you’re ignoring a lot of potential users. “

Another important piece of information coming out of the Recode conference is that Google has now indexed over 100 billion links within apps. This further exemplifies how search is growing beyond finding web pages to helping people interact with content that lives elsewhere on their devices.
