Refering to the statement:

"Several other analysts have speculated that Google is more interested in ensuring certain requirements for network openness, and is bidding just to preserve those rules."

I find it hard to believe Google would spend a ton of money on this without specific intentions of turning it into a cash cow like most everything else they've touched.

I welcome them entering the market. The more competition the better. Even if they do the rumored free cell phone type of deal, this will make Verizon, ATT and the rest get leaner and more efficient. How can anyone be against that? No one will be forcing people to use the Gphone instead of the iphone so even though they are starting to look like Microsoft, I welcome it.
If Microsoft is smart, maybe we need bill Phone or MSN phone. I jsut hope that Microsoft doesn't do a version of the iphone like they did broadcasting news. MSNBC has to be the most ideologically ridiculous station on cable.
