For Google the current financial crisis and recession is not a threat. It's an opportunity. In 2009 online ad spend will not decline but rather rise. Traditional ad budgets will be swapped to internet advertising because it offers better tracking, better scaling and better roi.

Newspapers are going out of business as more advertising moves online. Obviously Google isn't recession proof but I wouldn't write it off just yet.

For me, if Matt's listening, I'd suggest the engineers 20% projects should concentrate on killing link spam ;) That presents the biggest risk to Google's future IMHO.

Many people seemed to think the article stated the 20% projects were ending. Maybe Matt can tell the CEO he should use 25 (or some other figure) when saying projects might not get as many engineers assigned as easily now - so people don't get confused :-)

It's good that reading Search Engine Journal is one of your 20% projects, Matt!

I've corrected the above but stand by my statement of too few being useful to the public. I'd say GMail and Reader are some of the few exceptions the public has embraced in the past 10 years.

"According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that engineers are no longer given the 20% free time and freedom they once enjoyed for their own pet projects."

That's not what the article said; it said that Google might not do as many crazy 20-engineer projects without justification, not that 20% projects would stop.

"The sad truth though is that too few of these “20 percent projects” actually became useful for the public."

I don't know, I kind of like Google News and Gmail. :)

Just curious: does anyone have any figures as to how much Google Adwords spending has dropped since the recession hit?
