We use google analytics in tracking data for our clients. As far as free is concerned, Google analytics is the best way to go. If we are talking about small business clients, we do not need comprehensive reporting suite. I would say that if you own a small business, there is no data that Google analytics cannot cover. I would recommend that if you are getting 20k-50k traffic, google analytics is still good for you. If more than that, then using other reporting suite is a good idea.

I Wonder how much time and energy you put for stating such things. I'm no one in SEO stuff, but surely can understand that if a product like Google Analytic is popular and is still lacking such features. People who are specialists in SEO must have already been knowing all these things. Why YOU putting your ENERGY to say Google Analytic isn't good enough. Why DONT you mind your own business?

Hey no offence but I'm not favoring google or something. It just that I didn't liked the negative energy around this article I read. I kind of thinking I wasted my time here.

Its been a couple years since this article was written. Are there any updates as to Google releasing a system that will go and pull your web server log files to provide the data that the author lists it needing?

I think GA is an excellent tool for the price. :) Though you're right, It isn't a good idea to keep all of your eggs in the same basket. This has made me interested in trying out alternative tools.

I am trying the tools provided by Google for my site now. I think it should work or else Google will not the Top Search Engine.

I guess I am one of those newbie SEO's because I have always used Google analytics. Mainly because its free, and because I don't have to charge my clients more to absorb the cost. I have never used a log based program though, so maybe I should take a look at that.

Does Google Analytic mess up a lot for anyone else? It seems that GA has a hard time with unique users vs. returning users. Maybe it has something to do with users clearing their cookies, etc.

Good post though. Enjoyable read.

I use both GA and a log analyzer. I am using awstats that came with my hosting provider. Is this a goo or bad package?

This is true that monitoring the crawl of the website is important. GA can actually do that through a manipulation I unfortunately can not explain :-(, but this guy can: http://www.analytics.fr/google-analytics-seo-comment-mesurer-les-vistes-des-robots-et-crawlers-sur-votre-site/

I have tried the manip', and it's working very well. It tells me which bots has visited my site, and which pages they crawled. I actually think it's a bomb.
