Very often you need to find more similar sites to the one you already have: either for backlink pitch or to compile a link baiting list or just for your niche research. So today I am sharing a few short tips on how to find more related sites (apart from searching Google for relevant terms):

Find related sites linked from similar sources

[related:] advanced search operator looks for “co-citation”, i.e. pages that have similar backlink sources with the one submitted.

This search turns particularly useful for newly launched viral projects because it allows you to find sites with similar concept.

Find related sites tagged by same terms

Similicio.us shows which domains your site can be associated with based on the preferences of those who bookmarked it.

This tool allows you to understand what the site can be associated with based on Delicious users.

  • Those are good tools, Ann, although I must admit I find doing web searches and blogsearches on relevant keywords is where I put most of my time. Finding inlinks to important hub type URLs using the link: search can sometimes turn up other interesting sites.

  • The searches you suggested told me what I was already fairly certain of – my website’s niche is so small that I know all the other blogs in it!

    That’s pretty scary, really.

Not only do Google Trends and Similicious identify similar sites, but they also give some insight on how Google and Yahoo (Delicious’s owner) may use similar internal technologies to identify site co-citation.

  • Use analytics. It will show you referrer sites (where people came from). The traffic at those sites are relevant to your site. Contact those sites and see how you can increase your traffic (e.g., more text at those sites, images, ads, pages, etc.)

Great tips Ann. I use these and I also use keyword searches for blogs and forums as a great way to get into the niche community and find the websites related to mine.

I prefer to use yahoo backlink analysis.

  • I think the first two what you have given doesn’t seem to work for most of the websites, though they are being online for more than 6 to 10 years.

It is always better to go with Yahoo! in these cases.

If you have time please try out similar-site.com. It works differently from the ones that you described.
