Oh wait, I wasn't done naming Google acquisitions that spread much further than 'just' providing information:

Deja, a usenet company, later renamed Google Groups.
GrandCentral, a VoiP company, later renamed GoogleVoice.
And not to mention their chat service, GoogleTalk.
Or their e-mail, Gmail.

I dunno. Take your pick. Name a type of thing that allows people to socialize and you'll find Google somewhere on the list.

There are just so many things wrong with this comment, Dez Futak. First, Google owns YouTube (a social utility that spreads usercreated videos), Picasa (which acts like photobucket to share photos), GoogleDocs (which allows social userability to make documents), and Blogger (the original weblog for users to share what they're up to).

And since we're on the subject, Twitter has NOT been refusing Google. They were into the late stages of negotiations before Twitter CEO backed down and reconsidered. And, for the record, this would NOT be the first purchase of a creation by Twitter's founders. Google also bought Blogger from the same duo (Dorsey and Williams).

Well i don't think so that Twitter is salable, no matter what prize will Google offer but Twitter won't accept it.

Real time search is definitely an incredibly functional tool. A good website in this space is www.gethighnote.com, which has search as well as track and share. It's results are pretty useful and the track has helped me find some pretty cool information that might otherwise get lost.

Interesting! I wonder if Twitter would allow themselves to be bought out by Google...Twitter is now a massive player in the social media/marketing world in its own right, and so far they've resisted requests from the Big G.

Case in point: since Twitter took off in early 2009, I hardly do any active PPC marketing. I'm not saying they're mutually exclusive..after all, you can get traffic incredibly quickly using PPC with Google (or Bing/Yahoo for that matter).

What I'm trying to say is that Twitter offers an incredibly powerful platform for connecting people together on many levels...something that the Google team might well be very envious of. After all, Google's primary business model up to now has been to 'just' provide information...and that's only the tip of the iceberg in any social or business context.

This probably explains why Google is launching it's own social media platform (Google Wave) immanently...
