I compared the current look with the new look. The current look has 3,753 bytes of text, the new look has 2,740 byte. Both have an image of 8,558 bytes.
The new look represents a 27% reduction in ascii transfer size, with an 8% reduction in overall transfer size. I guess 8% adds up to a lot of bandwidth savings over 200 million searches per day.

good for google.
my only rant.
their page sucks at standards.
no dtd declaration. minimal css usage.

The new look looks awful compared to the old tabbed version.
The reason why they did that was because they lost a court case with http://www.booble.com (Adult search engine) about that booble.com looks like google.com so much, which it did…
Have a look…i dont know how google lost, i suppose they didnt protect their style of pages.
They (of course) didnt like that it looks like booble.com is affiliated with google.com even though it stated down the bottom that it isnt.
This is the reason why they changed the look.
Everything from the homepage to the search pages (search something like ‘computers’ to see style you wont get any results or you could even type something else in ;))
The reason why Google lost, is because they took Booble to court as it ‘looks like it was affiliated with google’. What they should have done was took them to court for stealing their design. Then they would have won. Googles court case didnt do them any favours…their case was stupid…on Booble.com it clearly states down the bottom that it has nothing to do with google and offers a link to google for people who may have typed Google.com wrong ^o)
Yes Google they did nick your style, and as the most popular search engine and you thought you would win the case easily and to avoid embarrassment change the style of Google (which they said it makes it easier to navigate but i think they have amde it harder).
You are right wheh you said that the pages are now quicker loading.
You dont think Google had any problems with bandwidth issues? Of course they didnt how many times you typed www.google.com and you cant access it? like you said 200 million searches a day … its stayed up.
I think Google may be corrupted you know they changed their look… a week after i searched Google (only search engine i use) and had new look about after typing in www.google.com about 5 times (not after each other, different times of the day) i came up with the old style Google… hit F5 and went back to the new one. Strange, i take it Google must not have updated all their computers.
