Commas in Meta Keyword Tags?

“Should I separate my keywords in my keywords tag by using commas or just spaces?” This is the koan of the search engine optimization world which has been asked and never completely answered since the meta tag was first developed. Having heard this question for the past 8 years, I must confess that I do not know the answer. My natural replies to the keyword meta tag paradox are “I use commas, he uses spaces. We both rank well..” or “Yes.

Barry Schwartz has gotten old school on us (not sure if he’s wearing his Adidas jumpsuit & Mercedes Hood Ornament necklace) and points out a thread from Search Engine Watch forums called META Keyword Strategies.

Barry posts that “Most say it doesn’t make a difference.” However, Danny Sullivan notes in the thread that the last time he spoke with Yahoo about commas or spaces in meta keywords, “they said to use commas.”

So which do you use, commas or just spaces?

Meta tags have never been a guaranteed way to gain a top ranking on crawler-based search engines. Today, the most valuable feature they offer the web site owner is the ability to control to some degree how their web pages are described by some search engines. They also offer the ability to prevent pages from being indexed at all. This page explores these and other meta tag-related features in more depth.
