Sure Google and the Brazilian legal system have had their rifts in the past, but this one takes the cake.
Daniela Cicarelli, model, opportunist and ex-wife of Ronaldo has sued YouTube (now owned by Google) over a very popular sex video which was posted of her and her boyfriend which was illegally uploaded to YouTube.
In an example of how influential the celebrities and uber-rich are in an uber-chic online Brasil, Cicarelli’s lawsuit has made it to the top of the Brazilian courts and there is now a court order for YouTube to remove the videos, or shut down its access in Brazil.
Brazil of course is Google’s cornerstone of South America and the driving force behind Orkut.
From Reuters:
A Brazilian court ordered the popular video sharing service YouTube, a unit of Internet search provider Google Inc., to be shut down until it removes a celebrity sex video from its site, a judicial clerk said on Thursday.
Cicarelli and boyfriend Tato Malzoni filed to force YouTube to take the video down and demanded $116,000 in damages for each day the video remains up. Some copies of the video have been taken off the site but users have reposted it.

The funny thing is, if you Google Daniela Cicarelli Video, it’s all over tons of other video hosting sites
Some people are just unbelievable. I searched for Daniela Cicarelli on Google images with my Content Filter On and the most she can wear is Bikini! Without the filter God knows what you can find. Why did it all become all of a sudden a big thing that deserves $116 K a day? Why did you video tape it in the first place? or at least, why didn’t you try to keep it in safe place?
If this claim is valid, then it means any person, be it celebrity or not, can video tape him self and just let the tape unprotected. Soon it will be all over the internet, and he can start collecting paychecks!!!
I am not with posting those videos, I am against how those strippers try to twist facts. Now that it’s got Google brand over it, they can shoot numbers easy.
The claim to shut down YouTube is not from Cicarelli, but from his “co-star”.
Last year, when the video broke-out brazilian justice ruled in first to all brazilian websites removed the video – it seems everyone did, but Google/YouTube up to last week. There was a penalty for each day video remains. Since the video was still runing, São Paulo State Superior Court decided by forbiden access to brazilian users, not shut down the website.
Marcelo, thank you for the addition to the story, could you direct me to some Brasilian news resources on the story.
I’ll be sure to post an update.
Loren, I’ll do a translation during the weekend, is that ok or it’ll be old news?
I agree with your points about celebrities and privacy issues.
Obrigado e um abraço, Marcelo
Huhh thanks for the news, this will probably make my Youtube stocks skyrocket http://www.trendio.com/word.php?wordid=2094&language=en
They should sue the person who posted the video, not youtube, duh!
Sueing youtube for a video is like sueing the phone company when someone harasses you on the phone.
