this was a very eye-opening interview. how would you recommend running an seo experiment if you own your own business, don't have too much time to start another online project, have just one business website (that you probably shouldn't mess with too much), etc. maybe try writing two different articles or something? would love a blog about it...

Nice write-up Ann!

Allow me add this; Or, you don't have to experiment at all. Different strokes for different folks and all....

Also; I don't consider social media sites like stumble or facebook or myspace or twitter as doing anything SEO in any way. It's SMO. A big difference.

also one is in canada so while her blog ranks #1 on google.com her term is specific to canada AND the site resides on canada IP addresses, so that became an offshoot experiment.

(i've done extensive testing on .ca vs. com for multiple clients over the last 4 years, so some experiments never end...)

it reallty depends on the experiment.. i am finishing up a collaborative experiment which involved 11 other people.. 4 of those followed my instructions to the letter, so within 2 hours 5 of us were #1 for our desired search term.

I could have closed the experiement then and it would have been successful evidence in why you DONT want to use the nofollow tag.

One of the particpants went above and beyond the experiment and therefore added extra variables but also caused that blog to be an outlier and be eliminated from the final results.

Two of the participants have made modifications and now rank #1 for their desired term.

3 people have other issues on why they didn't rise to the top that day.. but the factors contributing to the non-success revealed quite a bit..

so now.. we are going back one person at a time and making revisions until we get #1 but all we are doing is removing additional factors that the first 5 subjects didn't have.. i.e. nofollow.
