Mike,

Great guide! I'm a fan!

The rich snippet is real gold for the 7-Pack - got get those 5 reviews or more, really helps the click-thrus & calls!

I ALWAYS make sure my clients are getting reviews posted on all the major authority review sites b/c Google pulls that review data anyways into their Local Listings and it absolutely right that it protects them from losing all their reviews if just posted on one source.

I thinks its important to be pro-active with reviews, but be really careful not to break any TOS and to keep it natural.

Great stuff here!

I just re-read your post and came across a profound phrase I missed the first time around. "Aware And Care" Business owners with bad reviews can do a lot for their reputation just by letting others know that they're aware of the problem and that they care enough to fix it. I'm going to write this weeks Local Search post on that topic. Thank you.

Great stuff Mike.
When a business has 5 reviews or more listed, the “review stars” show up. Good to know!

I'm experimenting with one of your ideas to use review sites to build up followers on facebook and twitter and build loyalty.

Mike,

Great stuff!

I couldn't agree more about fake reviews. Every time I start explaining the power of local reviews to clients they get that "look" and I quickly bring the hammer down on employee, family, and friend generated reviews - strictly clients and customers!

Great tip about review diversity too. One of the problems I run into is with most sites the reviewer has to create an account and it turns into juuuust a little too much work for most people.

@Dick I'm glad you picked up something new. I am interested to see how the new reviews are handled that google is pulling in from hyperlocal sites that don't have a star rating assigned. That threshold might have to be 5 "review site" reviews in order to get an average star rating. It will be interested to see.

@Bob Here is a little algo I put together you might be interested in... Idaho = Maui - Heat - Plant Life - Ocean + Potatoes. Thanks for the kind words and I am glad that you liked the stars thing as well. I imagine you will see the decision engine start picking up more sites for reviews overtime so watch for that. Sure would help people make decisions.

Great article Mike.

I've been doing local search for our customers here on Maui for some time and I've never noticed some of the things you pointed out in your article. Stars showing up after 5 reviews and which search engines are pulling reviews from which sites are two great examples of what I learned from you.

Thanks again Mike. I'm looking forward to becoming a regular follower.

Mike -

Nicely put together, especially the part about the five star threshold on Google. I learned something new !

Reviews are very important, and thanks for warning about not fabricating reviews or hijacking listings.

@Michael With Google's ability to attribute text to a Local Listing that insn't a link...and then have that count as a citation which boosts local rankings I can see the eventual bleed over to where any buzz about your site when it is mentioned in, or not in, a link will add into the organic algo in a bigger way. The local algo has been doing that type of work for a long time. So, if they are now able to gather reviews from sites that aren't even technically review sites, weigh and rank them, I don't see what is stopping them from that approach organically.
