4 People Search Engines – Looking for Someone Online

Like reputation management, people search is rather a hot topic. Nowadays you can find almost anything about anyone online. Surprisingly, dedicated person search is not yet well-developed (probably that has something to do with burning online privacy problems) but still is something to look into:

Search Engine What you will learn about the person
Yoname.com Social media mentions.
Intelius.com Age, previous cities and relatives.
Pipl.com Mentions in web documents.
Zoominfo.com Job records.

1. Yoname.com focuses on social media search looking through LinkedIn, FaceBook, Yahoo 360, Flickr, Friendster, MySpace.

It searches for exact match (First Name + Second Name), for some social networks it will also check only first name / second name.

The tool will also sum up:

  • Location;
  • Gender;
  • Age;
  • Business related information.

Yoname.com

2. Intelius.com is a paid search engine that will provide you with the free search summary containing:

  • Person age;
  • Previous cities;
  • Relatives.

Intelius.com

It will also suggest related queries to refine your search.

3. Pipl.com will get your IP and first try to search for a person located somewhere nearby. After that it will basically list the name web mentions.

Pipl.com

4. Zoominfo.com focuses on business related information: it will look for the person as an employee of various companies.

    The simple & easy way would be to search on Google with

    + FaceBook
    + LinkedIn
    + Twitter
    + Flickr
    + Blog
    + AnyPopularService!

    Have got few success with this.. also adding few more paramters would help better. Name+Profession (if known) !!

    Great suggestion Ann! Thanks!

  2. Vinay says:

    I typed + FaceBook and seems like the name section got ignored since it was seen as a HTML Code format.

  7. Problem with a lot of these search engines are they seem to be very country specific. Would be nice to be able to search the US, Canada and UK with one click of the button

    I’ve always just used google and probably will continue to do so but thanks for letting me know these exist. I find people are searching names in increasingly high volumes.

  9. Gilbert says:

    Great post. I think you nailed the top four in the people search area. Just a few comments about each:

    http://www.yoname.com also allows search by user name and e-mail for free

    intellius provides some free info but it’s a pay site.

    pipl, provides relevent results and is free. I found the interface a little messy.

    zoominfo.com is pretty cool but needs a lot of work on the user experience from my point of view.

    Thanks for the post Ann. These are very helpful. I have a handful of searches I have to make sometime this week. Guess what… my high school classmates!

    Not really sure why a quick search on Yahoo’s and Google’s dbase aren’t helping. I think I have to go into these four people finders you mentioned and look for them there.

    Now I know a handful are either on Facebook, Friendster & Hi5. It would be nice to try the paid people finders too… not sure if the results are worth paying for though. Has anyone tried it out? I’d really like to know.

    I have been on the Web for a few years and didn’t know, until recently, that you could have your own personal people search engine. Naturally, I went out and got one. And I look around and see the “magic code” that give the ads. Then there is the “monetized links” to photos. The Web is such a deceptive place. I love it. Long live the Web.

    I’m trying to look for someone but I only have his photos..any suggestions on how to go about?

  21. None of these guys can find everyone, but some are better than others when it comes to certain types of searches. We started PeopleSearching.com as a way for users to rank different people search, records sites and reputation services. What we soon found was that which service worked best for person A worked horrible for person B. What does it mean? You may need to use multiple services before you find the information you are searching for.

  22. Susan O;Connor ne Topping says:

    I am looking for my natural mother Joyce Hemingway, who was married to the late John Topping in the early 1960′s. They lived on Bedford Street in Burnley Lancashire. Up until his death my dad never told me the truth about my mother, who i am most desperate to find. I was brought up by my Grandparents Alfred and Evelyn Topping on Woodhouse Street in Burnley. Poeple have told me that i have a strong look of my natural mother, but nothing more. If you are still alive and out their somewhere i would be grateful if you would get in touch with me, after all there are two sides to every story. All i was told is that my mother didn’t want me. I now have barely any living relative’s at all and i know my dad’s wife Maureen never wanted me. So if your out their mum, or anybody reads this who can help me be reunited with my natural mothe Joyce Hemingway if would be extremely grateful if they would get in touch at susanmaryoc@hotmail.co.uk
