Good tips here, but I wanted to add that using URL redirects (such as tinyurl) often causes a problem when hitting spam filters. My email marketing software (iContact) doesn't allow me to use (what they see as) suspicious re-directs.

Good article. Am going to link to it from this week's newsletter if you don't mind.

On the image links I always provide at least one text alternative as you suggest. But about 1/3 of the people like to click on the image and they should be accommodated, of course.

On the outgoing links issue there are services that will try to tell you if any of your links in particular will get you in trouble. For example http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm ( http://bit.ly/BBdqp if the long link broke).

When it comes to image links using alt text is always good.
For the email openrate tracking I put something like "To view the offert entirely click show/view/get images" in an 1x1px image.
