$200 Google PC Coming to Wal-Mart Today

Everex is launching its gPC “Google PC” today at Wal-Mart stores for the low price of $200. The gPC runs off of a mix of Ubuntu Linux, Google Applications and Open Source software like OpenOffice to offer fully functional applications at an affordable price.

The gPC runs off a 1.5GHz Via C7-D processor, Via UniChrome Pro IGP graphics core, and offers 512MB of memory, an 80GB hard drive and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive.

But the real secret sauce is a software suite that begins with what the company calls its “gOS,” which turns out to be a customized Ubuntu Linux kernel. The software bundle includes open source desktop applications highlighted by OpenOffice, GIMP photo software, the Xing DVD and video player, and Rhythmbox music management software.

Additionally, the PC’s user interface includes icons pointing to popular Google applications such as Documents and Spreadsheets, Calendar, News, and Maps. Also pre-installed is the Firefox web browser, Meebo IM, and Skype.

Move over Microsoft, here comes something meatier.

The world has been waiting for a Google PC offering, possibly a free one with search advertising offsetting the price, but for $200, this PC is more or less free and delivers some very useful tools to the masses, who may not usually download such applications.

To think that my first 233 from Cybermax with a 1G hard drive cost me well over $2200.00. AND I had to get a printer on top of that. Kudos to Google on this. Your right, this is almost free. It will be interesting to see how they hold up and if there are any quality issues.

  2. this sounds like a pretty sick deal. can you install office in it?

Facts… the “g” does not stand for Google. It stands for “green” as in “environmentally friendly. It just happens to link to a lot of Google apps, but it also include plenty of pre-installed applications that in no way are associated with Google. Lets write the facts man!

from a tech standpoint being sdram is out of alot of suppliers stock shelves people may have a hard time replacing the memory or upgrading especially, also when for a hundred or so dollars more you can build a core duo. Says it only costs 170.00 to make I question that just a little but hey can’t say there lying. Haven’t played with the OS but am interested in how the OS works, I will at least put it on one machine to work on.
